How can I color over black hair?

My hair is naturally black (or dark dark brown, idk which) and I would like to dye it other colors. Most dyes, however, show up very lightly or not at all in my hair and I do not want to bleach it. Are there any over the counter hair dyes that will work?

thanks!

That is tough! I had my hair dyed black for a long time and it took me forever to get it out.

Go for 'Color Rays' hair dye. It comes in strange colors (red, fusia[wich is lovely] blue orange), BUT you can also find brown and blonde in the brand. Be careful! this stuff really works and does wonders in dark hair, you dont need to leave it on excessive time limits like regular hair dye. This stuff is especially designed for dark hair and is amazing!

If your hair is to dark the best thing todo is bleach it!!!

i don't know about over the counter stuff, try a place like sallys or something, it's really hard to cover up really dark hair without striping the color out first. i know you don't want to bleach your hair, so maybe you should talk to a hairdresser before you start putting alot of stuff in your hair. my sister in law has black hair, and she always has trouble getting it to the color she wants, i think dark red was about the only thing she got to work. and she didn't want to bleach her hair either. but sometimes you need a clean slate to color on top of to get the color you want. good luck.

Anytime you lighten your hair, you are stripping it of it's natural properties and causing damage. You'll have to go extreme light in order to put a color on top of it to get the real look you're going for.

The key is to make sure your hair is washed well, (rinse at least four times) THOROUGHLY conditioned (mayonnaise and egg yolks are good, cheap and heavy in cholestorols.) A deep conditioner conditioner can be found in a hair supply store or just pick up some EVOO, stick it in the microwave and let it sit covered in your hair for about 15 -20 min. A conditioner is KEY and REGULAR MAINTENENCE. When stripping/damaging your hair, you MUST make sure your ends are clipped and not only should you watch what you put on your hair but in your body.

Vitamin E supps and PLENTY of WATER does wonders for the hair.

I know this isn't the exact answer you were looking for, but I had the same issue and after many trails learned the importance of good hair/body care.

Herba Tints and Natural Hair Dyes can be found at Health food stores and are much better for the hair. But remember, if you are going much lighter, there will be stripping... you just want to keep it at a mininum so, TAKE CARE! AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, this may not be something you want to do at home on your own. Make sure you have a stylist you trust!!!
